A thought that popped up in my mind when I was working on keeping myself distracted from my thoughts this last week was this.
Often, we find ourselves trapped in the cycle of simply existing. We go through the motions, ticking off to-do lists, reacting to the demands of life, and before we know it, another day has passed us by.
We carry the weight of yesterday’s struggles, mistakes, regrets, believing that today will be a continuation of the same, or that it should be. But here’s another truth: just because you lived yesterday doesn’t mean you can’t live today too.
There’s a significant difference between living and merely existing. To exist is to breathe, to move through each day on autopilot, doing what needs to be done without truly engaging with life. But to live is something more — it is to be present, to seek joy and meaning in the little moments, and to choose how we experience the blessing of each day.
Many of us hold on to yesterday for different reasons – hurt, disappointment, overwhelm. We replay old memories, relive past conversations, and sometimes let yesterday’s pain colour the way we see today.
All of this is natural to feel. The experiences of our past shape who we are today, but they don’t have to hold us captive. Just because we endured challenges or felt like we were simply surviving yesterday, doesn’t mean we are destined to live the same way every other waking day after.
Letting go of yesterday does not mean ignoring our past or pretending it didn’t happen. Rather it means acknowledging it, learning from it, and then setting it aside so we can open ourselves up to more possibilities.
Our greatest power lies in our ability to choose how we live, even if yesterday was filled with hardship or disappointment. We can wake up each morning and decide that today will be different — that we will not simply exist but fully live. This decision is not about erasing the past; it’s about choosing not to let it define the present.
And yet another truth to this is that just because you had one good day, doesn’t mean you give up on having another good day. You matter enough to have as many good days as you want. Life isn’t only about pain and sorrow and struggle, but more often it is about how we navigate through those challenges to live, to thrive where we fall.
So, let’s make today about:
- Taking that first step toward a dream we’ve put on hold.
- Connecting with loved ones in a way that brings us joy.
- Doing something that scares us, just to remind ourselves that we’re alive.
- Finding a small moment of gratitude, even if it’s as simple as feeling the sun on our face or the wind in our hair (dusty wind if you live in the GCC).
Living is not a one-time decision; it’s needs to be a daily choice. Every morning, we have the opportunity to choose how we want to experience the day ahead. Would we rather step into it with a sense of dread or with hope, and curiosity?
Remember, each moment in life is a new chance to start fresh. Don’t let the shadow of yesterday dim the light of today. Instead, let today be the day you take a deep breath, shake off the past, and truly live — not just exist. Life is too precious to live on autopilot.
Choose to live today, not because it’s easy or perfect, but because you deserve to feel alive.

Love always,
